About ocean-badger

Our Story

Founded in Cape Town in 2018, ocean-badger emerged from a shared passion among architects, historians, and cultural preservationists who recognised that South Africa's extraordinary built heritage required dedicated advocacy and expertise.

What began as informal documentation projects in the Western Cape has grown into a comprehensive heritage consultancy serving clients across all nine provinces. Our founding team brought together decades of combined experience in architectural history, conservation practice, and community heritage projects.

We chose our name as a tribute to the honey badger—a creature renowned for its tenacity and resourcefulness. Similarly, traditional South African architecture demonstrates remarkable resilience and adaptability, qualities we seek to honour in our preservation work.

Our Approach

We believe that understanding architectural heritage requires more than technical analysis. Each building tells stories—of the communities who built them, the environments they responded to, and the cultural values they embodied. Our multidisciplinary methodology integrates architectural survey with oral history, archival research, and community consultation.

This holistic approach ensures that our documentation captures not just physical structures but the living cultural practices that give them meaning.

What Guides Our Work

Whether documenting a Cape Dutch homestead or recording the spatial organisation of a rural settlement, we seek to create resources that inform both preservation efforts and future design.
